What is the path to proficiency?
The image above is a section of what is known as 'The Path to Proficiency'. The path was developed by the American Counsel on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The path is a visual representation of the benchmarks language learners reach on their journey to proficiency. These benchmarks collaborate with the descriptors and skill indicators of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as well as the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Foreign Languages. In other words, it's super reliable and accepted for determining one's progress in language learning!
How does this path apply to my learning?
No matter our learning ability we all have to start somewhere - at the beginning! Each learner reaches the proficiency benchmarks at their own pace; an individual's level of proficiency does not indicate failure or success in one's language learning, but rather the growth an individual has reached. That being said, it is Kap's goal to help you reach a certain level of growth within each level of German available at PHS. The approximate benchmarks, with year's beginning benchmark to year's end benchmark are as follows:
- German 1 - Novice Low to Novice High
- German 2 - Novice High to Intermediate Low
- German 3 - Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid
- German 4 - Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High
